BIAB vs Gel Polish vs Acrylics — Which Nail Course Should You Learn First?

BIAB vs Gel Polish vs Acrylics — Which Should You Learn First?

One of the most common questions from people starting their nail journey is: should I learn gel polish, BIAB, or acrylics first? The honest answer depends on what you want to offer, who your clients will be, and how quickly you want to start earning. Here's the full breakdown.

What is Gel Polish?

Gel polish is a coloured, UV-cured polish applied over the natural nail. It lasts 2–3 weeks without chipping, creates a glossy finish, and is the single most requested nail treatment in the UK, Australia, Canada, and USA. It's also the simplest technique to learn — making it the ideal first qualification.

Fempire's Gel Polish Course: £45. Fully accredited, worldwide certificate.

What is BIAB?

BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) is a gel-based product applied over the natural nail to add strength and length while looking completely natural. It's more durable than gel polish, doesn't damage natural nails, and is the fastest-growing treatment in the nail industry. Clients book it every 3–4 weeks.

Fempire's BIAB Course: £57. Fully accredited, worldwide certificate.

What are Acrylics?

Acrylic nails are a two-component system (liquid monomer and powder polymer) that creates a hard, durable extension over the natural nail or a form. Acrylics allow for maximum length and are the traditional nail extension method. They require more skill and practice than gel polish or BIAB.

Acrylics are covered in Fempire's Complete Nail Diploma: £247.

So Which Should You Learn First?

Learn Gel Polish first if: you're a complete beginner, you want to start earning as quickly as possible, or you have a limited budget for kit.

Learn BIAB first if: you want to offer the most in-demand treatment, you're willing to invest slightly more in kit, or you want to attract clients who prioritise nail health.

Learn Acrylics first if: you specifically want to offer nail extensions and length from day one.

Our most popular recommendation: start with the BIAB course. It's only slightly more complex than gel polish, commands higher prices, has enormous demand, and keeps clients coming back every 3–4 weeks. Your client book will fill faster with BIAB than any other single service.
